Your intervertebral discs are located between the vertebrae of your spine. Discs are responsible for providing cushioning when you move. Discs are made of a gel-like substance. When this material seeps out of the disc, it is known as a herniated disc. Fortunately, this is an injury that can be treated by our chiropractor at Bankers Hall Chiropractic.
A: A herniated disc can occur in a couple of ways. The first is to wear and tear on the spine, which is a natural part of aging. As you grow older, your discs lose their water content and elasticity, causing them to herniate. The second cause is improper lifting technique, which can cause a weakened disc to herniate.
A: A herniated disc often causes pain in the lower back. Depending on where the injury is located, you may also experience neck pain and pain in the arms or legs. Some people also experience numbness, tingling, and weakness in the part of the body where the nerves are affected.
A: Our chiropractor will perform a physical exam to test your reflexes, muscle strength, your ability to walk, and your ability to feel vibrations and light touches. If our chiropractor suspects that you have a herniated disc, an MRI will be ordered, which will allow our chiropractor to see the herniated disc and any nerves that are being affected by it. An x-ray can also rule out other issues that could be causing your pain.
A: Our chiropractor can perform a focused chiropractic adjustment to relieve your pain, improve your circulation, and enhance your body’s natural healing process. Our chiropractor may also use a lumbar traction machine that will allow the joint to open and take the pressure off the disc. This will return your spine to its natural position.
